Who Should Use OAT?
Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is recognized by the America Academy of Sleep Medicine as an effective first line of treatment for mild and moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients (up to 30 events per hour).
Oral appliances are also recommended for severe OSA patients if they cannot tolerate CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines. Patients with severe OSA should always try a CPAP machine before considering oral appliance therapy.
Oral appliances are also very beneficial for patients who use a CPAP machine, but enjoy camping or will sometimes sleep in areas without electrical service. Some patients who travel to countries with different electrical service may find if beneficial to use an oral appliance on those occasions.
